This course is a companion course to CLA-118 and is designed for the Healthcare career student to practice and gain skill and experience in blood collection according to standard operating procedures. Students will practice collecting blood specimens, proper handling and processing techniques used to deliver samples to the laboratory for testing. The students will demonstrate their ability to perform these activities effectively and safely, emulating the workplace environment. Universal and Standard Precautions will be stressed. The students will collect blood samples on their lab partners throughout the term. Designed for the student that is pursuing a healthcare career to provide a broad understanding of blood collection and specimen handling techniques used in ambulatory and medical center laboratories. Exposes the students to a general hands-on experience learning the clinical laboratory field by performing some of the waived testing, specimen processing and handling skills used in the clinical laboratory while practicing the safety regulations of state and federal requirements. Basic quality assurance practices are outlined and shown to give a basic understanding of how to obtain and maintain quality laboratory testing. Many of the competencies required in the Core Module of the National Accreditation Agency of Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS's) Clinical Assistant Curriculum will be covered.
